Tips for Reading to Preschoolers
Read early and often. The early years are critical to developing a lifelong love of reading. Below are some tips for your child to become a happy and confident reader. Try something new each week and see what they like.
- Read together every day.
Enjoy some cuddle time and read to your child daily. - Give everything a name.
Build the child’s vocabulary by saying the name for all objects. For example, “Look at that door, see the windows and handle. What do you do with a handle?” - Have fun reading.
Use different voices and add humor, sounds and expressions to appeal to your child. - Be interactive.
Discuss what’s happening in the book and point to things and ask questions about the images. - Know when to stop.
If you child loses interest put the book away for awhile and come back to it later. - Get evaluated.ย
